How long can a book be? I suppose there are few limitations if you insist. But I would also advice that just looking at a brick of a book and thinking or starting it can be so daunting that it scares off some readers.
Advice differs, and depends on the genre you are writing. But for a fantasy novel you should generally be within the 85-to-150 000-word range.
How many pages is that? Single space paragraphs, my WIP is now 100400 words, and about 265 pages.
When I started writing I was thinking a two-book series. I have a scene I would consider a natural book divider. But as I had the main plot on paper, just getting 85 000 words seemed daunting, and I concluded it should be a one-book event.
However, with my current wordcount, and several missing chapters in both ends, it’s looking like a potential brick of a book. So now I’m back to consider a series again. Cutting chapters to get within the adviced wordcount is out of the question, unless I’m told different once editors start chopping at my book. I want transitions between chapter to be smooth, and not jump too much in time.
Have you felt the challenge of reading, or writing, a thick book?
