The writing milestone

The writing milestone

When I first started writing my book, I got stuck at about 50 000 words. I felt like all the scenes I had in my mind for weeks in advance were already on paper, and all that was left was the «filler» between the main scenes. The minimum goal of 85 000 words seemed unattainable.

I didn’t know how to write the fillers. And I know very well from reading books that if the fillers are not engaging, the reader will skim through it.

So, I took a break. It was c lose to Christmas, and I had to busy myself with work and hollidaypreparations anyway.

And slowly, new scenes started popping up in my mind. Not fillers, but real scenes that were important for the flow of the story. Flowing so strongly it was distracting from my other responsibilities. Something has to happen between scene A and B, and who says only the battle scenes or romantic kisses are what drives the story.

And suddenly, within the last two weeks of the year, I had passed the milestone, and I am currently at over 97 000. Now, i find the fear of overshooting the 150 000 mark more threatening.

Remember to allow yourself breaks to let the story flow into you naturally.

Have you experienced writing blocks? And how did you overcome them? If you are stuck in your plot, do you use friends or family to inspire a solution?
