The most overwhelming thought i had when i started writing was if i would be able to fill a whole book with my story. In particular i have always been very fascinated with authors ability to describe in great detail the world around them, as well as creating fillers between the main action scenes. The stories in my head play out as movies, and images don’t require much thought as to explanations.
I received several tips, which i want to forward to you, hoping this can make the startup easier for you.
- A book doesn’t have to be written from start to finish, in order. Start my writing whatever comes to you. Any scene at any time in the story. maybe it’s a love scene that pops into your head the most. Maybe it’s a confrontation.
- Keep it simple. No need to think of the lofty descriptions and fillers. Get the main action of the scene down. You can come back later and add to your scene when you feel the inspiration.
- Write the dialog. If you have a conversation in your head, write the dialog down first, no he said/she said or » «. Just the words that come out of their mouth.
I also think it is important to tell yourself that a book isn’t written in a month. Sure, some people probably can do that. But how realistic is that for most of us, with work, family and life in general. I regularly feel the desperation coming on as i realize i am out of ideas. Then you take a break! One day, one week, one month or even one year. However long it takes for you to find inspiration to add to your story.
It is also important to accept the fact that sometimes stories die once they start escaping you head. And that is OK too. Don’t delete it. Maybe you will read it in ten years and get inspired. Either to continue the story or to use the ideas it gave you to create a new one. You never know.
What is you best tip?
